Under the circumstances of coronavirus, anxiety, anger, vigilant and all the bad emotions came to me and living inside of me.
Noise sound somehow matches my emotion very well these days.
By learning the sound of noise, I realized I did not pay attention to what category of music/sound I’ve been listening to before, which is noise music. This music genre makes me satisfied sometimes for some reason, at the same time it is definitely pretty annoying for people who don’t like it. I also didn’t like it when I was young when all the interests were on pop music or elegant melodies.
During this week of studying and experimenting with noise, The Art of Noise created by Luigi Russolo in 1913 inspired me a lot. I was shocked by how early noise music existed in this world at the beginning, and it was also so futuristic, even until now, in the 21st century. After searching around on YouTube, I found a video from 4 years ago which is Isam Hansen’s noise music performance. I like his performance, technology became huge support not only for his music and performance but also for most of us nowadays.
Besides, the sound walk I went on the first day of class was also really inspiring. The sound walk web issued an instruction about listening to the sound of a traffic light. This is related to sound signals and also reminds me of fog sound. Therefore, I mostly recorded signals during this week, such as the sound of the tram bell, police car, dryer machine signal, etc. Also some other noises, like printing, knead paper, rub clothes and so on.
Additionally, when I think about noise, the word ‘广场舞’ (square dancing) pops up in my mind, which is a very typical Chinese outdoor activity that my grandpa and grandma usually do. They always play loud music to make sure everyone who is dancing could hear it. The young generation like me hates how loud they played and also the music itself. So I also searched for videos of this phenomenon in China and added it as a reference on my hotglue page.
Afterward, I came up with three short pieces of audio collages at the end: Alarm, No Square Dancing, and Take me to the universe, please. It was my first time editing audios, and I enjoyed it a lot!
